Images are some of the most powerful tools on your website. They can instantly grab attention, communicate your brand’s personality, and make your content more engaging. But choosing the wrong images — blurry, off-brand, or irrelevant — can hurt your site’s credibility.
Here’s a guide to help you choose the right images for your website so they look great, load fast, and tell the right story.
1. Understand your brand and audience
Before you search for images, get clear on your brand style. Are you fun and playful, or sleek and professional? Do you want your site to feel bold and energetic, or calm and minimal?
Consider your audience too. A law firm’s visitors expect professional headshots and clean office images. A surf school’s visitors will expect action shots of waves, boards, and beach life.
Your images should reflect both your brand identity and the expectations of your visitors.
2. Use only high-quality images
Nothing undermines your website faster than grainy, stretched, or pixelated photos. Always start with high-resolution images and scale them down for web use (never the other way around).
If you’re using product photos, invest in professional photography or learn the basics of good lighting and composition. For headshots, aim for consistent backgrounds and lighting so your team page looks cohesive.
Or, if using images from stock image websites, see #3 below .
3. Find reliable image sources
For professional-looking images, use trusted sources. Some options include:
- Free stock photography: Unsplash, Pexels
- Paid stock photography: Shutterstock, iStock
4. Choose images that add value
Every image should have a purpose. Ask yourself:
- Does it help explain the text or concept?
- Does it guide the visitor’s eye toward important information?
- Does it evoke the right emotion?
Avoid generic “filler” stock images. They may be quick to use but often look impersonal. Instead, look for images that support your message and feel specific to your business.
If you use stock photos, choose ones that are less common and edit them slightly (crop, adjust colours, add overlays) to make them feel more unique.
5. Keep the style consistent
Consistency is key to a professional-looking website. Use images with similar lighting, colour tones, and framing. For example, if your homepage hero image is bright and airy, don’t use dark, moody product shots on the same page.
If possible, apply a subtle filter or preset to all your images so they share a unified look.
6. Optimise for speed and SEO
Even the most beautiful images will frustrate visitors if they take forever to load. Compress your images using tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh before uploading.

Add descriptive file names (e.g., “blue-ceramic-mug.jpg” instead of “IMG_1234.jpg”) and use alt text to describe the image. This helps with accessibility and search engine optimisation.
7. Test how they look on mobile
Many visitors will view your site on a phone, so check that your images scale well on smaller screens. Avoid text-heavy images that become unreadable when shrunk.
Final Tip: Think of your images as silent storytellers. The right ones will make visitors feel something, understand your brand more clearly, and want to stay longer on your site.
